You may have heard of Alzheimer’s disease and know that it affects memory. Well, that’s just the start.
Dementia is a term for a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. It’s not one specific disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but there are well over 100 different types. Each type has its own characteristics, but one thing they all have in common is that they’re fatal.
Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. That can mean speaking, eating, reading, remembering, recognising danger, understanding conversation and so much more.
More than 350,000 Australians have dementia. It is the second leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure.
